Ando Hiroshige Biography

Ando Hiroshige (1797-1858) was one of the most famous Japanese artists of the Ukiyo-e (or 'art of the floating world') school, renowned for his depictions of landscapes and seascapes. Inspired by the prints of Katsushika Hokusai at an early age, Hiroshige was apprenticed to Utagawa Toyohiro to become an artist. On our site you will see a fantastic series of reproductions of his best woodcuts for £4.95, including Navaro rapids, View from Satta Suruga and Pine beach at Miko, all taken from the series One Hundred Famous Views of Endo (now Tokyo) which Hiroshige completed between 1856 and 1858 at the very end of his life. Hiroshige is thought to have produced over 8000 prints and other works in his lifetime.
