Claude Monet Biography


Claude Monet was bron in Paris in 1845. His father, a grocer wanted him to follow him into the family business, but Claude chose instead to become an artist, and attended the La Havre School of Arts. Later he moved back to Paris, where he became friends with other artists including Edouard Manet, and Edgar Degas. Here he bacme one of the leading painters of the Impressionist movement.

Monet's distinctive style is characterized by the luminosity of his palette, expressive brushstrokes and his depictions of light and shadow. Claude Monet was one of the first painters to leave the studio and paint in the open air, often painting the same scene repeatedly (as in the case of his Notre Dame Cathedral, and Haystacks series), recording the ever changing play of light and colour. He travelled around France, and also to Venice and London where he produced some of his best loved canvases 'The Thames below Westminster', and 'Houses of Parliament'.

Towards the end of his life, Monet devoted his time to the creation of a stunning garden at Giverny, which became the subject for many of his best loved paintings including his Japanese Bridge, Le Ninfee Rosa and Nympheas, Water Landscape, and his famous Water Lilies series.
