was born in Chicago, USA on the 5th of December 1901 to immigrants Flora and Elias Disney. During his childhood, Walt and his brothers and sister followed their father all over America as he attempted various business ventures and jobs. Walt developed his passion for drawing throughout his childhood, and in later years produced cartoon strips for his school magazine. He also studied art at night school. Walt dropped out of school at the age of 16 to join the army, but as he was too young, he was not accepted. instead he joined the Red Cross, and drove an ambulance in France. When the War ended, Disney moved to Kansas where he found employment at an Art studio, designing posters and magazine ads. He decided that he wanted to be a film director, and travelled to Hollywood to find work. After being rejected by every studio, he set up a small animation workshop in his uncle's garage, where he produced his first cartoon. Before it was even finished, he had found a distributor for his work. After various commissioned films, Disney's first silent Mickey Mouse cartoon appeared. Mickey was an immediate success, along with characters Pluto, Goofy and Donald Duck.
In 1932 Disney was given an Academy Award for the creation of Mickey mouse and shortly afterwards Walt began a feature-length cartoon, 'Snow White and the seven Dwarfs. It was the first of many hugely successful animated movies. Disney became a household name, and he went on to create many best-loved children's characters and films.Walt Disney died of lung cancer on the 15th December 1966, shortly before the opening of his theme park in Florida.
