Henri Matisse Biography


Henri Matisse was born on December 31st in Cateau-Cambresis, France in 1869. Originally, he studied to be a lawyer in Paris, but soon his interests turned to painting. He studied art at the Academie Julian, and at the Ecole des Beaux Arts with Gustave Moreau. Matisse held his first exhibition in 1904. He became a leading member of the 'Fauves', meaning 'Wild Beast' - a derogatory term used by art critics who frowned upon Matisse's uninhibited use of colour. He was also inspired by Eastern art, in particular fabrics and textile patterns, which can be seen throughout his portraits and paintings of interiors. He broke away from the style and colours of the Impressionists, and used Primitive art as inspiration for his bold, colourful paintings. As a close friend of artist Pablo picasso, their work was often compared. In 1941 Henri was diagnosed with cancer, and after treatment he was confined to a wheelchair. However, this did nothing to slow his creativity, and he employed assistants to help him create his massive coloured paper collages (including his 'Blue Nudes' and 'Jazz' series) which he refered to as 'gouaches decoupes'. Matisse died in 1954 in Nice.
