Roy Lichtenstein Artist Biography - Pop artist Roy Lichtenstein was born in New York city in 1923. Lichtenstein became famed for his large scale paintings of enlarged comic strips. Like his contemporary Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein used mass produced imagery taken from magazines, 1950's comic books, advertising and product packaging as the inspiration for his paintings. He enlarged images taken from comic strips and painstakingly imitated their Ben Day dots and primary colours used in cheap news printing.

Like Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein adopted industrial screen printing processes to create his paintings (as you will see in Lichtenstien fine art prints and posters Kiss V , Drowning Girl and Forget It! Forget Me!, 1962), blending the divide between commercial and fine art. With his bold accessible paintings, many of which parody the American culture of the time, Lichtenstein became one of the best loved American Pop artists of the twentieth century. He also produced sculptures and murals. In 1993 the Museum of Modern Art in New York held a major retrospective of his work.
