Tamara De Lempicka Artist Biography
Tamara de Lempicka was born into a wealthy family in Warsaw, Poland in 1898. Her childhood is not well documented, but at the age of 18, Tamara married the Russian lawyer Tadeusz Lempicki, before fleeing to France with their one year old daughter to escape the Russian Revolution of 1918. In Paris de Lempicka studied painting, and quickly became one of the most sought after society painters. De Lempicka became famed for her distinctive and elegant portrait paintings which combined the simple, geometric forms of cubism with a chic Art Deco style. Her models were writers, actresses, her husband, and lovers (both male and female), and she gained a reputation for her beauty, parties and scandalous love affairs. In 1939 Tamara re-married and emigrated again to America, where her success was repeated in New York.
Recently there has been a revived interest in her work due to the recent Tamara de Lempicka exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts in London. Many of the paintings seen in the exhibition can be found on our website as high quality fine art prints and posters, including her 'Girl in a Green Dress' art print plus 'Autoportrait, 'Adam et Eve' and 'Portrait of Madame P.' poster. Both Madonna and Barbara Streisand are collectors of her paintings.
