Artist Michael Embden was born in Surrey in 1948 and moved to Brighton at the age of eight. He studied graphics and illustration at Brighton College of Art and went on to become a successful freelance illustrator during the 1970s and 1980s. During the 1990’s Michael gradually gave up illustration to concentrate on landscape painting. Landscape is his natural subject and has always been a major preoccupation in his work, driven by a passion for the natural world.
Over the years Embden has developed a style which allows him to explore a strongly personal sense of mood and atmosphere through the play of light. He is especially drawn to the quality of light that occurs at the beginning and end of the day; low light and long shadows that can reveal a poetic, dramatic or dreamlike quality.
Michael Emden's work in pure watercolour using no white or body colour, building up many layers of transparent washes to create luminosity and strong tonal contrast.
He has made many paintings of the South Downs and is involved in an ongoing project, making paintings of some of the most wild and beautiful areas of Britain and Ireland.
